In order to display this page, your browser will contact the HTTP server at gaia.cs. and exhange HTTP messages with the server in order to download this page, as discussed in section 2.2 of the text. While Wireshark is running, enter the URL: and have that page displayed in your browser. Let’s do so using a web browser, which will use the HTTP protocol that we will study in detail in class to download content from a website.Ħ. To do so, we’ll need to generate some network traffic. Let’s capture some interesting packets first. But don’t stop the packet capture just yet. By selecting Capture pulldown menu and selecting Stop, you can stop packet capture. This window shows the packets being captured. Once you begin packet capture, a window similar to that shown in Figure 3 will appear. In this case, we’d use “Wireless Network Connection”. Packet capture will now begin- Wireshark is now capturing all packets being sent/recieved from/by your computer! Click on Start for the interface on which you want to begin packet capture (in this case, the Gigabit network Connection). You’ll see a list of the interfaces on your computer as well as a count of the packets that have been observed on that interface so far. This will cause the “Wireshark: Capture Interfaces” window to be displayed, as shown in Figure 4.Ĥ.

To begin packet capture, select the Capture pull down menu and select Interfaces. Wireshark has not yet begun capturing packets.ģ. You will initially see a window similar to that shown in Figure 2. Now, we’ll just start following the instructions of the tutorial provided to us.ġ. After installing it, we simply start it and get this pretty starting screen: We simply go to  to download the appropriate version for our computer. And I’m talking about the word “fun”, not the other one (which I use quite profusely when trying to do programming assignments.)) All joking aside, let us begin.

We will simply be learning how to use Wireshark, and just having a bit of fun (I know, the f word is quite unheard of in computer science. In this quick Wireshark Lab, we are just starting with the basics.
